Enter the Dragon (Fruit)

All Bruce Lee references aside….this is one cool looking piece of fruit! The dragon fruit, or red pitaya as it’s also called, is the fruit of a cactus species. The bright magenta-red skin and yellow flames of the exterior had drawn a large crowd in the entrance to Wegmans (including me). The roughly ten dollar price per fruit may have scared a few people off, but not me…..I had to have one (or two) to share with you! The outside is shockingly different than its bright white, seeded inside. The fruit has the texture of a kiwi with an almost bland, mildly sweet flavor. Is it worth handing over a ten dollar bill, you ask? (I’m not sure they are always that much.) For the occasional shock value, it just may be….and it is quite large. The boys did try it and gave the thumbs up!

Dragon fruit, or pitaya. Arguably one of the coolest looking fruits available.

Sweet Apple Goodness!

Heather and I have many favorite desserts. The apple crostata is the newest on the list. The large size is $12 (small is $6), and quite the bargain in the bakery section at Wegmans. It’s worth every penny for its light as air crust and sweet apple goodness. I had actually purchased the cranberry apple crostata 3 times with the intention of shooting it, but we ate it first. When I went back for it the 4th time, the apple cranberry had been phased out. Thus, Heather presents the apple crostata! I have to add…they have now phased out the apple, and are on to cherry! My apologies, as I’ve been a little too busy to get this shot posted. But I hope you jump at the opportunity to get a cherry crostata!! Let me know if it’s as good as I’m dreaming it is…

The super yummy apple crostata!

Breakfast…the yogurt parfait

I was making breakfast in conjunction with writing the chicken dumpling post. So, I figured I’d write a post about breakfast, too. There is just something about fresh berries that makes them hard to resist. (On March 1st that really means fresh from Wegmans). Berries and Vanilla Super Yogurt topped with granola sounds like a good start to me.

Raspberries and blackberries!

The yogurt parfait.

Chicken Dumplings!

While the tomatoes in my previous shot were roasting, Heather and I were dying to eat something. The smell was driving us crazy. So I pulled out the chicken dumplings we had purchased at Wegmans! A quick trip through the microwave and they were ready to go.

Paired with Chateau Ste. Michelle Gewurztraminer (we call this our house white), and it's ready to share!

A little green onion, a touch of chili garlic sauce, and soy for dipping!
